Alpharetta roofing company makes a roof more beautiful

What better time to make a cosmetic change to a roof than when you have just bought a house? That was the thinking of Alpharetta resident Jason Proffitt, who had just bought a house that needed a roof upgrade to be more consistent with the look and feel with the rest of the house. Who else to call but Hewatt Roofing, an Alpharetta roofing company experienced with all kinds of roofing jobs?

This was actually the second time Hewatt Roofing had worked for Proffitt. He was so pleased with their roofing work on his first home he didn’t even consider another Alpharetta roofing company.

“I didn’t even think twice who would roof this one,” he said. “It would be Hewatt Roofing.”

After meeting with Jerry Hewatt, Proffitt chose a 30-year architectural Timberline® High Definition® Shingle from GAF. This is a shingle with outstanding curb appeal due to a shadow line running through it that gives it the appearance of exceptional depth.

“There is simply no other shingle like it,” said Hewatt.

The challenge

Since the roof was very large and steep, what the industry calls a 12/12 pitch, Hewatt knew it would be a two-day job and scheduled the work for a week when the weather was predicted to be dry.

Hewatt and his crew showed at 7:00 am on the appointed day. To avoid leaving a stripped roof unprotected overnight, they stripped only half of the roof that morning so they could install the new shingles that same day.

Of course, as on many roofs, once the old shingles were off, Hewatt and his crew found problems that the homeowner could not see – numerous sheets of rotted plywood from where previous roofers had put toe board nail holes in the shingles to work on the steep roof and had not sealed the holes to keep water out. Thus, for years rain had been penetrating through to the decking and rotting it. Luckily, Hewatt Roofing uses cushions, ropes and safety gear to avoid using this antiquated method on a steep roof.

The result

The Hewatt crew replaced the rotten plywood. They then covered the decking with GAF Shingle-Mate® Roof Deck Protection, a felt covering that uses an adhesive backing to form a smooth flat surface for the shingles to rest on. They also installed GAF StormGuard®, an ice and water barrier, in all critical areas on the roof, including valleys and around the chimney and all the plumbing pipes.

They then installed the new shingles and cleaned up and hauled away all the trash and debris from the day’s work.

On the second day, they repeated the same process on the other half of the roof. They also installed 180 feet of Cobra® RigidVent 3™ for proper attic ventilation. RidgeVent removes heat and moisture from the attic to help with power bills. It also extends the life of the roof and minimizes peeling of interior and exterior paint.

“The product,” said Pam Hewatt, “is amazing!”

After installing the rest of the shingles, to finish the look, they installed 600 feet of ridge caps, cleaned up and left behind a beautiful new roof.
